Colombia is the world’s sixth-largest seaborne thermal coal exporter. President Gustavo Petro, head of the first leftist government, pledged to gradually phase out fossil fuel production, use, and export. The trade unions support this decision and engage actively in shaping this transition. In 2019, coal mining accounted for 1.07 percent of GDP. Taxes and royalties from coal contributed 2.4 percent to state revenues. The largest mining companies are Anglo-Swiss Glencore and U.S.-based Drummond, both of which have reduced investments in coal mining in Colombia1. ...
